Today the National Agricultural Statistical Service published the objective estimate for the 2019 California Almond crop at 2.20 billion pounds based on 1.17 million bearing acres.
This is down 12% from May's Subjective Estimate and 3.5% down from last year's crop.
This is a large variance between the Subjective and the Objective. It has been since 2013 where the initial estimate was 2 billion pounds, then reduced to 1.85 million pounds only to end the year with a 2 billion pound crop.
The surprise is the average nut set which is reporting down 17.8% from last year.
The industry will now work through the transition of old crop to new crop with several Almond products already unavailable. A later than usual harvest is also anticipated.
